In Muscatine on Thursday, January 31, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 – 4:30.  Fiscat of Pure Foods called from Minneapolis & so did Wing regarding ‘corn grits.’  Filled 6 trucks.  Letter from Lela.  Warm today, 50°.  TV at night.  To bed at 9 P.M.”  Lela was a sister of Helen’s.

Ice Cream In January

In Muscatine on Wednesday, January 30, 1952, high school friend Mike Collier and I walked to Neitzel’s drug store on Mulberry Avenue near Fourth Street for ice cream sodas after supper.

B-r-r-r-r

In Muscatine on Tuesday, January 29, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 – 4:30.  2° below zero this morning.  Loaded 6 tank trucks & 4 tank cars today.  Stopped at dime store for toothpaste.  5° above at 10:30 P.M.  To bed at 11 P.M.”

Snow Flurries

In Muscatine on Monday, January 28, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Filled 3 trucks today.  Cold all day & snow flurries.  Wrote letter to Mother.  Lavonne here to return pillow; Judy Fisher here to play with Dalene; Mike Collier here for Stan.  Margaret Sinnott here at night.”

Nice Sunday

In Muscatine on Sunday, January 27, 1952, Dale wrote, “Up at 9:30 & breakfast with Helen.  Washed clothes.  Bob Shoup here for short visit.  Mike here to visit Stan.  Mary Ellen here to play with Dalene.  Clear & bright & cold, 26°.”

Weed Park

In Muscatine on Saturday, January 26, 1952, Dale wrote, “Non-work day.  Dalene & I took a ride through Weed Park.  I washed the kitchen ceiling.  Went to a show with Dalene in the afternoon.  Warm & rainy.  Heard Rod Mead on the radio.”  Above: waterfowl on the pond in Weed Park.

Fishy

In Muscatine on Friday, January 25, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 – 4:30.  Filled 3 trucks today.  Warmer, 35°.  Some rain.  Talked to Wing on phone about lost tank truck.  Fish for supper.  Ringer is sick.”  Ringer was our dog.

That’s Cold

In Muscatine on Thursday, January 24, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 – 4:30.  No tank cars, no trucks today.  4° below zero this morning.  Tried to get more heat in Receiving Room.  Worked in District office all forenoon.  Meads here at night.”

Doc Makes House Call

In Muscatine on Wednesday, January 23, 1952, Dale wrote, “Stan home from school with a cold.  Dr. Swayze gave both a shot.”  He doesn’t say who the other person was, but isn’t it nice that doctors made house calls then.

Loading A Tank Car

In Muscatine on Tuesday, January 22, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 – 4:30.  Arms & Bushery put over 100 cap seals on still.  No trucks today – loaded 1 tank car.  Cold & snowy all day, streets very slick.  To store after work.  Home all evening at TV.”

Old Man Winter

In Muscatine on Monday, January 21, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 – 4:30.  Snowstorm today.  Plant changing still to 2 column.  Went to Dr. Swayze & drug store on the way home.  Helped Dalene with geography.  Went to bed early.”

Sunday Radio

In Muscatine on Sunday, January 20, 1952, Dale wrote, “Up at 7:30 & read Sunday paper.  Everybody up for breakfast.  Heard a good sermon on the radio.  Took a nap in the morning & rested most all day.  TV at night.”

At The Movies

In Muscatine on Saturday, January 19, 1952, Dale wrote, “Bought car license $13.  Paid FPEA insurance.  Paid Bloom Inc.  Took family downtown & to grocery store.  Kids went to a show in afternoon & Stan again at night.  Lavonne Owens here in afternoon.  Damp & rainy.”

TV With Friends

In Muscatine on Friday, January 18, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 1 & 3:30 to 5:30.  Helen & I talked to school Principal Johnson at Court House.  Took Meek & Hayes to hotel at 3:30.  Meads here at night for TV.  Warm.”  Rod and Kay Mead were friends.

Leaky Truck

In Muscatine on Thursday, January 17, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 5:30.  Stayed late to unload a leaky tank truck.  Meek & Hayes still here.”

School Days

In Muscatine on Wednesday, January 16, 1952, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 1:30.  Went to school house with Helen in afternoon to talk to Dalene’s teacher, Mrs. Nichols.  Hayes & Meek at plant and at our house at night to watch TV.  Took them to hotel at 11 P.M.”  Dalene attended Jefferson Elementary School, above.

Wahoo!

In Muscatine on Tuesday, January 15, 1952, Dale wrote that he played Wahoo, a board game played with marbles, with Dalene before and after supper.  Above: we’re playing Wahoo several years earlier.

Know What This Is?

In Muscatine on Sunday, January 13, 1952, Dale wrote, “Up late & read the Sunday paper.  Dalene has red throat.  Stan went to Sunday school.  Had baked chicken for dinner.  Our TV set has something wrong, too much snow.”

Navy Won!

In Muscatine on Saturday, January 12, 1952, Dale wrote, “Non-work day.  Watched Navy beat Georgetown in basketball on TV in afternoon.  Watched pro football game, too.  Stan & Dalene went to a show in the afternoon.  I went to the store in evening.  TV at night.”
