Williams Gardner with his 1930s team of Bird and Tony

America was still in the Great Depression.  Franklin Delano Roosevelt had his second inauguration.  Dale and Helen moved three times during 1937, first to Hyattsville, Maryland, then back to the city of Washington, then to a farm near Potomac, Maryland, so they lived in four different places that year.  Since home air conditioning didn’t exist, hot weather was tolerated by electric fans.  They got their first telephone this year and bought their first car – a 1930 Model A Ford.  This is also the year that Dale left his file clerk job and started working for the Internal Revenue Service, where he spent the rest of his Civil Service career, mostly in what was then the Alcohol Tax Unit.
