In Muscatine on Sunday, March 16, 1952, Dale wrote, “Nice day. Dalene and Maryella went to A-Mus-U in the afternoon. Stan rode his bike.” Maryella was a friend of Dalene’s. The A-Muse-U Theater at 103 Sycamore Street had one screen and 528 seats. We used to go there for a double feature with a cartoon, for ten cents.

On The Way To Osceola
On Saturday, March 9, 1957, Dale and Dalene were in Owatonna, Minnesota, on their way from Minneapolis to Osceola where Helen was visiting her sister Wilma after Wilma’s surgery. Dale wrote, “Up at 6 and on to Osceola by 7. Arrived at 1 p.m., no trouble. Saw Wilma. Took Helen to the hospital and took Lela to Louie’s. Back to Mother’s by 9 p.m. Saw Marie’s pictures at Mother’s. Nice day.” Lela was the other sister to Helen and Wilma, Louie was one of their brothers, and Marie was Dale’s sister.
Dale Drives To Clarence
On Thursday, March 8, 1951, Dale and Dalene drove from Muscatine to Clarence, Iowa, with a co-worker for him to pick up his new Chevrolet. Dale and Dalene visited with Olive Olsgaard and her girls a little while, then drove back to Muscatine. Helen and Dale had been close friends of Orris and Olive Olsgaard in the late 1930s in Washington, DC.
Dale Still In Bed
Bedfast in Muscatine on Saturday, March 7, 1953, Dale wrote, “Lavonne took Helen downtown. Marie called, Lloyd and Mother coming on the train. Got here at 8:30 p.m. Watched TV awhile and then to bed.” Marie and Lloyd were Dale’s siblings. Lavonne was the wife of Dale’s co-worker Jack Owens. Thirty years later, Lavonne and Jack (center) visited Helen and Dale in Osceola, above.

Ten Inches Of Snow
In Muscatine on Tuesday, March 4, 1952, after ten inches of snow fell overnight, Dale got stuck driving out of the garage behind our house on East Seventh Street and had to shovel snow a half-block downhill in the alley to Mulberry Avenue to go to work. The next day, he left the car parked on the street and wrote, “Too much snow to get it in garage.”

Birth Of The Air Defense Command
On Monday, February 26, 1940, the United States Air Defense Command was created. It was inactivated in 1944, when the threat of air attack seemed negligible. It was reestablished as a major command in 1951, and I did some computer programming work for it in the early 1960s. It was redesignated the Aerospace Defense Command in 1968, and divided into the Tactical Air Command and the Strategic Air Command in 1980.
Dale Drives Home
On Tuesday, February 25, 1958, after attending Pearl Gardner’s funeral (see yesterday’s blog), Dale wrote, “I drove to Minneapolis from Osceola in 6 hours. Had Stan’s car washed at a Richfield car wash. High was 57°. Beautiful day for driving, south wind. Helen and I went to the library after supper. Stan went to class at the U at night.” That was a 300-mile drive.
Dale Drives Stan’s Chevy
In Osceola from Minneapolis on Monday, February 24, 1958, on his way to Pearl Gardner’s funeral, Dale wrote, “Lloyd, Marie, and I drove Stan’s Chevy to Milo for Uncle Pearl’s funeral. Nice day, high 52°. Mother and I went to the cemetery at sunset to see the flowers on Uncle Pearl’s grave.” Pearl Gardner was a second cousin of Dale’s. Lloyd and Marie were Dale’s siblings. My Chevy was a 1957 model similar to the above – I wish I had kept it.
