When Doctors Made House Calls

On Saturday, November 11, 1950, Dale wrote, “At Osceola all day at the folks.  I got breakfast & washed dishes.  Doctor here in forenoon, Dad resting.  I went to Wilma’s in the afternoon, to town to see the doctor for Mother at night.”  Wilma was Helen’s sister, married to George Casey.

Back To Osceola

On Friday, November 10, 1950, Dale wrote, “Cashed my check & paid bills.  Helen ironed.  I drove back to Osceola in the afternoon.  I did Dad’s chores & washed dishes.  Watched Osceola beat Lamoni 26-7.  Sat in Will Swan’s car most of the game.  Called Helen.”

More Corn Picking

In Muscatine on Thursday, November 9, 1950, after visiting Osceola for his father’s heart condition, Dale wrote, “Dad is a little better.  Cold today.  I unloaded Eddie’s wagon of corn.  We drove home to Muscatine today to get the kids back in school.”  Above: picking corn in November, 1950, at Williams and Jettie’s farm.

Neighbor Picks Corn

Still in Osceola for his father’s heart condition on Wednesday, November 8, 1950, Dale wrote, “Eddie Liggitt picked a load of corn this morning.  Dr. Dean said Dad is lots better.  Helen and I ran Marie’s store from 4 to 5 p.m.”  Eddie Liggitt was a son of Clarence Liggitt, the farmer across highway 34 from Williams and Jettie’s farm.  Dale’s sister Marie owned a small grocery store just north of the train station.

Kids In A Plane

In Osceola for his father’s heart condition on Tuesday, November 7, 1950, Dale wrote, “At folks, Dad may be a little better.  Helen and I went to Louie’s in afternoon to visit.  Wilma took Stan and Dalene for a ride in an airplane.”  Louie and Wilma were two of Helen’s siblings (Helen was the youngest of nine children).

Williams Resting

In Osceola on Monday, November 6, 1950, Dale wrote, “At folks.  Finally found our suitcase on the bus from Des Moines.  Helen & I went to Wilma’s a little while in the afternoon to see Stan & Dalene.  Doctor here 2 or 3 times today.  Dad is resting easier.”

Dale’s Father Sickens

On Sunday, November 5, 1950, Dale drove his family from Muscatine to Osceola.  His father Williams was very sick.  Stan and Dalene were left with George and Wilma Casey (Helen’s sister) on their farm two miles north of Osceola, above.

Notre Dame Wins

In Muscatine on Saturday, November 4, 1950, Dale wrote, “Up late.  I went to Richardson’s in the afternoon to watch Notre Dame beat Navy 19 to 13.  Went to the store.  Took Helen to the library.  Kids went skating.  I went to Max J. at night to watch television.”

Roller Skating

In Muscatine on Friday, November 3, 1950, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Cool today.  35° at night.  Went to store at 11 A.M.  Jack Owens here for supper.  Stan & Dalene went to the roller skating rink at night.  I went to a show.”

Home Again

In Muscatine on Thursday, November 2, 1950, Dale wrote, “Fixed corn crib in the morning & plowed a little while.  Drove home to Muscatine in the afternoon, 3½ hours.  Glad to be home.  To bed early.”

Corn On The Farm

On Wednesday, November 1, 1950, at Williams and Jettie’s farm near Osceola, Dale wrote, “Worked at folks all day, unloaded corn, fixed battery on tractor.  Went to Osceola after lumber for corn crib.  Went to high school football game, Osceola 26, Bedford 19.”  He drove back to Muscatine the next day.  Above: corn stacked by the corn crib on Williams and Jettie’s farm.

On Tuesday, October 31, 1950, Dale wrote, “Went to Osceola to see Dad.  He is having heart trouble.”  Above: Williams and Jettie Gardner at their farm in 1950.

We Need A TV

In Muscatine on Monday, October 30, 1950, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Very quiet day.  Had lunch at Oregon Trail.  Took the family to Bushery’s at night for TV.”

Lube Job

In Muscatine on Sunday, October 29, 1950, Dale wrote, “Up at 9 A.M. & got breakfast.  Washed & greased the car.  Took the family to Bushery’s in the afternoon to watch TV.  Olsgaards were there.  Home at 8:30 & to bed early.”

Another Weekly Report

In Muscatine on Friday, October 27, 1950, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Wrote my weekly report.  Stanley went to a school party at night.  Dalene & I went to a show at night.  Radke called on phone from hotel.  Warm.”

Playing ‘Wahoo’

In Muscatine on Thursday, October 26, 1950, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Nice day.  I made 7 puzzle boards. Came home early with sore back.  Went to Bushery’s at night to watch television.”  Those puzzle boards were for a board game with marbles he called ‘Wahoo’ (above in 1948).

Bowling Again

In Muscatine on Wednesday, October 25, 1950, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Pay day.  Helen washed.  Bought Dalene a new ball.  Took Helen to library.  Bowled at night.  To bed about 11:30 P.M.”  I guess Dalene broke her October 23 ball.

Watching TV

In Muscatine on Tuesday, October 24, 1950, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Olsgaard dropped in for a visit regarding tank truck inspection.  Stanley & I went to Max’s to watch television at night.  Took popcorn.”

Fridge Fixed!

In Muscatine on Monday, October 23, 1950, Dale wrote, “Worked 8 to 4:30.  Took the refrigerator motor to the plant & got it fixed for $1.07 (new starter).  Works fine now.  Bought Dalene a rubber ball.  I went to Bushery’s at night to watch television.”
