Moving To Columbia Heights

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, November 15, 1955, Dale, Helen, and Dalene moved from a tourist cabin to their house in Columbia Heights.  He wrote, “Vern Lowe brought furniture from Muscatine at 1 P.M.  Snow storm and cold.  Miserable day.  Couldn’t get our kitchen stove hooked up.  Discouraging.  Ate supper out.”  The next day, they enrolled Dalene in school in Columbia Heights.  Below: their new home on Reservoir Boulevard.

Neighbors Pitch In

Visiting from Muscatine in Osceola on Tuesday, November 14, 1950, for his father’s heart condition, Dale wrote, “54 neighbors, 35 tractors, 26 wagons, 5 elevators, and 12 mechanical pickers picked Dad’s 3200 bushels corn by noon.  Approximately 50 acres.  30 neighbor ladies served dinner in East Chapel church.  I took pictures.  Big day.”  Below: a wagonload of corn waiting to go to my Grandpa’s corn crib.

Dale Buys A Sweater

In Minneapolis on Wednesday, November 13, 1957, Dale wrote, “Bought a new coat sweater at Frieden’s after work, got half off for a watermark.”  It probably looked a lot like this:

Third Home In One Year

On Thursday, November 12, 1936, Dale and Helen rent their third residence of the year in Washington, DC, an apartment at 225 Rhode Island Avenue N.E.  They move in the following Monday.  The location is shown below.

Salute To The Marines

On Thursday, November 11, 1943, while on temporary duty from Clinton, Iowa, to Omaha, Nebraska (where Dale’s brother Lloyd had a wartime job), Dale and Lloyd went to a movie together, “Salute to the Marines.”

Picking Corn

In Osceola on Thursday, November 9, 1950, for his father’s heart condition, Dale wrote, “Dad is a little better.  Cold today.  I unloaded Eddie’s wagon of corn.  We drove home to Muscatine today to get the kids back in school.”  He left Mom, Dalene and me in Muscatine and returned to Osceola the next day.  Below: picking corn at Williams and Jettie’s farm.

JFK Wins Election

Tuesday, November 8, 1960, was Election Day.  In Minneapolis, Dale wrote, “Looks like Kennedy at midnight.  Stayed up till midnight and after, watching election results on TV.”  John F. Kennedy was elected the next President, with Lyndon Johnson as Vice President:

FDR Wins Fourth Term!

On Tuesday, November 7, 1944 – Election Day – Incumbent President Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt defeated Republican challenger Thomas E. Dewey for an unprecedented fourth term.  His Vice President, Harry S. Truman, succeeded Roosevelt as President when Roosevelt died in April 1945.

Getting Taller

In Muscatine on Tuesday, November 6, 1951, Dale wrote, “Stanley is tall as I am.”   That would have been 5 feet, 10½ inches.  I had a growing spurt that year; a year later I was 2 inches taller than Dad.

Dale And Helen Buy A House

On Saturday, November 5, 1955, in Columbia Heights (a northern suburb of Minneapolis), Dale and Helen bought a house at 3727 Reservoir Boulevard.  They would live there until Dale retired in 1968.  Below: the location of the house.

Ike Wins!

In Muscatine on Tuesday, November 4, 1952, Dale wrote, “Stayed home at night and watched TV until 1:30 a.m., watching Eisenhower and Nixon elected.”

Breakfast At Johnnie’s Grill

In Muscatine on Sunday, November 2, 1952, Dale took Dalene for a morning ride.  They had breakfast at Johnnie’s Grill.  I have no memory of that restaurant, but doesn’t this picture make you hungry?

Unloading Corn On The Farm

On Wednesday, November 1, 1950, at Williams and Jettie’s farm near Osceola, Dale wrote, “Worked at folks all day, unloaded corn, fixed battery on tractor.  Went to Osceola after lumber for corn crib.  Went to high school football game, Osceola 26, Bedford 19.”  He drove back to Muscatine the next day.  Below: corn stacked by the corn crib on Williams and Jettie’s farm.

Sad Days

On Tuesday, October 31, 1950, Dale wrote, “Went to Osceola to see Dad.  He is having heart trouble.”  Dale took several more trips between Muscatine and Osceola that fall; his father died December 16.  Below: The last picture I have from 1950 of Williams and Jettie Gardner, my grandparents, taken at their farm.

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, October 30, 1956, Dale wrote, “I went to see ‘Trail of the Lonesome Pine’ and ‘Shepherd of the Hills.’  Good shows.”

Goodbye To Muscatine

In Muscatine on Saturday, October 29, 1955, Dale wrote, “My last day of duty at Grain Processing Corporation, Muscatine, Iowa.”  He had been transferred to the St. Paul office of the Alcohol Tax Unit, Internal Revenue Service.  Below: the plant and barges on the Mississippi seen from  Muscatine’s riverside walk.

In Muscatine on Wednesday, October 28, 1953, Dale wrote, “Dalene and I went to Maid-Rite and then home.  She rode her bicycle.”  Those were goooood sandwiches.

In Muscatine on Thursday, October 27, 1955, Dale, Helen, and Dalene went to a Junior College play I was in, “The Bishop Misbehaves.”  Mother clipped the following picture out of the newspaper and underlined my name so I wouldn’t miss it:
