Still recovering in Muscatine from his leg problems on Sunday, April 5, 1953, Dale wrote, “We took Mother home.  Stanley drove part way.  Rode around Osceola.  Stayed at Mother’s at night.”  I was about to get my first driver’s license.  He trusted me to drive on the highway, but I’ll bet it made him nervous.

Good Friday Paint Job

In Minneapolis on Friday, April 4, 1958, Dale took the day off work and wrote, “Good Friday.  Painted Dalene’s bedroom all afternoon.  Put twin beds in Dalene’s room and new double bed frame in Stan’s room.”

Marshall Plan

On Saturday, April 3, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Marshall Plan, designed to help European allies rebuild after World War II and resist Communism.  Watch the video narrated by Bob Hope.

Nice Osceola Visit

On Sunday, April 2, 1961, Dale wrote, “Dinny and I at Mother’s in Osceola.  Left there early and drove to Minneapolis.  Nice trip.  Drove 900 miles since Friday.  Called Marie to send our clothes we forgot and left at Mother’s.”  ‘Dinny’ was his nickname for Dalene.

Dale’s Aunt Ina Dies

In Minneapolis on Thursday, March 31, 1960, Dale got word that Jettie’s younger sister Ina Short Hook (above) died in Mercy Hospital, in Des Moines, Iowa.  Dale attended her funeral in Des Moines on Saturday, April 2.  Ina had a twin brother, Ira Short.

Dale Goes Bowling

In Muscatine on Wednesday, March 30, 1955, Dale bowled 439 and his bowling team won two out of three games.  Two weeks later, he bowled 496.

Car Repairs

Still recovering from his leg problems in Muscatine on Sunday, March 29, 1953, Dale wrote, “Paul and Lena Benson took me to Oelwein to pick up our Mercury.  Cost $22.98 for transmission repair.  Harley Erts visited in the afternoon.”  Benson and Erts were co-workers.  Our 1939 Mercury looked like the one above.

Don’t Go Near The Water

In Minneapolis on Friday, March 28, 1958, Dale wrote, “Helen and I went to a show at night, ‘Don’t Go Near The Water.’  Dalene went to the church canteen.  Stan went to the new General Mills office building and on a date afterward.”  I was working at the General Mills Research Lab at the time.

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, March 27, 1962, Dale wrote, “High 46°, the snow is almost all gone, thank goodness.  Dalene had her car washed.  Stayed up to watch the Tonight show.”

Dale Still In Hospital

In Muscatine on Tuesday, March 24, 1953, Dale wrote, “In Bellevue Hospital.  Dr. Catlona says I have soft gristle between back bones that allows nerve to be pinched.  Recommends a leather brace for $50.  Wow!  Helen came in the evening, also Borchard and Reverend Eveland.”  Borchard was a co-worker and Eveland was the minister at the Evangelical United Brethren Church we attended.  Dale went home the next day.

In Minneapolis on Monday, March 25, 1963, Dale wrote, “High 38° and rain in the afternoon.  Helen watched ‘Adventures in Paradise’ in the evening.”

Dale In The Hospital

In Muscatine on Monday, March 23, 1953, Dale wrote, “In Bellevue Hospital for X-rays and traction on my legs.  Helen came in the afternoon.  Legs hurt after coming back upstairs from X-ray and again after Helen left in the evening.”  His body seems to be rebelling against that new Post of Duty in St. Paul.  Above: a postcard picture of the hospital.

In Minneapolis on Friday, March 22, 1957, Dale wrote, “Got my second polio shot.  Nice day, high 52°.  Watched state high school basketball tournament at night.”

Dale Heads To St. Paul

In Muscatine on Saturday, March 21, 1953, Dale wrote, “Mother, Marie, Susan, and Nancy came over at 4 p.m. to stay all night.  I got my seventh hormone shot from Dr. Miller.  Got the car loaded to go to St. Paul tomorrow.”  He was going to his new but short-lived Post of Duty in St. Paul.  Marie was Dale’s sister, Susan was Marie’s daughter, and Nancy was a daughter of Dale’s brother Lloyd.  Above: Helen and Dale in warmer 1953 weather.

Watching TV At Work

In Minneapolis on Thursday, March 20, 1958, Dale wrote, “Borrowed Charlotte’s portable TV and watched state high school basketball tournament at work.  Also after supper at home.  Good games and close.  Stan went to U classes at night.”  Charlotte was a co-worker of his.  The TV probably looked like the Zenith model above.

Counting Down To Retire

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, March 19, 1957, Dale wrote, “Radke dropped in at work to say goodbye.  He is retiring this week.  64 years old, 24 years of service including military.  Going to live in Florida.”  Mr. Radke was a previous supervisor.  This must have started Dad’s retirement juices flowing, too.  But he works eleven more years.

Joe Garwood Dies

In Osceola on Tuesday, March 18, 1952, Joseph Garwood died.  He was the second husband of Sarah Gardner, sister of Dale’s grandfather Isaac Newton Gardner.

“I Shall Return”

On Tuesday, March 17, 1942, six days after departing the Philippines during World War II, General Douglas MacArthur declared, “I came through and I shall return” as he arrived in Australia to become supreme commander of Allied forces in the southwest Pacific theater.
