On Friday, March 31, 1961, Dale wrote, “Annual leave. Dalene and I left Minneapolis early for Muscatine. Spent two hours at the alcohol plant and then on to Osceola for supper. Lloyd and Marie were there too. At Mother’s all night. Beautiful day for driving, 23 mpg for the Valiant.” Lloyd and Marie were Dale’s brother and sister. In Osceola on Sunday, March 29, 1959, Dale wrote, “Went out to George and Wilma’s before breakfast. Mother and I ate TV dinners. She has a hoarse throat and can’t talk out loud.” Helen’s sister Wilma (and husband George Casey) farmed north of town. Dale took the next day off work to drive back to Minneapolis.

In Minneapolis on Saturday, March 26, 1966, Dale wrote, “High 35°. Took Lela Schmitt to supper with us at Sweden House. Watched Edina beat Duluth for the state high school basketball championship.” Mrs. Schmitt lived in the upstairs apartment, and her husband, Lynn, was in the service. Edina (26-0) beat Duluth East 82-75 in overtime.

In Minneapolis on Sunday, March 24, 1957, Dale wrote, “Dalene and I took a ride over to a store in St. Paul that makes donuts. Marie wanted to know how they were. She is thinking of buying a donut making machine. Nice day, windy, in the forties.” Marie Kimmel (Dale’s sister) would have sold her own donuts in her store with that machine.

In Minneapolis on Saturday, March 22, 1958, Dale wrote, “Helen, Dinnie, and I went downtown and bought Dalene a new suit and spring coat. Beautiful day, high 50°. Helen and I washed in late afternoon. Watched the Minnesota high school basketball tournament at night. Austin won.” Austin beat Brainerd, 68 to 63.
