To Osceola Via Muscatine

On Friday, March 31, 1961, Dale wrote, “Annual leave.  Dalene and I left Minneapolis early for Muscatine.  Spent two hours at the alcohol plant and then on to Osceola for supper.  Lloyd and Marie were there too.  At Mother’s all night.  Beautiful day for driving, 23 mpg for the Valiant.”  Lloyd and Marie were Dale’s brother and sister.  Above: a 1961 Plymouth Valiant, similar to Dalene’s.

Watching ‘Jeopardy!’

On Monday, March 30, 1964, the original version of the TV game show “Jeopardy!” premiered on NBC, hosted by Art Fleming.  Here is the current host, Alex Trebek, introducing a short clip.

TV Dinners

In Osceola on Sunday, March 29, 1959, Dale wrote, “Went out to George and Wilma’s before breakfast.  Mother and I ate TV dinners.  She has a hoarse throat and can’t talk out loud.”  Helen’s sister Wilma (and husband George Casey) farmed north of town.  Dale took the next day off work to drive back to Minneapolis.

On The Road Again

On Saturday, March 28, 1959, Dale drove from Minneapolis to Osceola (about 295 miles), stopping to visit Merle Osterquist (old co-worker) in Des Moines.  He got to Osceola at 5 p.m. and called Helen about 7 p.m.

Meals On Wheels

In Osceola on Thursday, March 27, 1969, Dale went to the Clarke County Community Center to arrange for a hot meal to be delivered to Jettie each day, at her house.

1966 State Basketball Champs

In Minneapolis on Saturday, March 26, 1966, Dale wrote, “High 35°.  Took Lela Schmitt to supper with us at Sweden House.  Watched Edina beat Duluth for the state high school basketball championship.”  Mrs. Schmitt lived in the upstairs apartment, and her husband, Lynn, was in the service.  Edina (26-0) beat Duluth East 82-75 in overtime.

In Minneapolis on Friday, March 25, 1966, Dale wrote, “High 28°.  Watched two high school basketball games at night on TV, one was three overtimes, Edina over Henning.”

I Want One!

In Minneapolis on Sunday, March 24, 1957, Dale wrote, “Dalene and I took a ride over to a store in St. Paul that makes donuts.  Marie wanted to know how they were.  She is thinking of buying a donut making machine.  Nice day, windy, in the forties.”  Marie Kimmel (Dale’s sister) would have sold her own donuts in her store with that machine.

In Minneapolis on Saturday, March 23, 1957, Dale wrote, “Went shopping at Southdale.  Bought sport coat and hammock, and car wash brush.  Washed the car.  Watched state high school basketball finals at night.  Minneapolis Roosevelt won.”  Roosevelt (27-0) beat Red Wing, 59 to 51.

In Minneapolis on Saturday, March 22, 1958, Dale wrote, “Helen, Dinnie, and I went downtown and bought Dalene a new suit and spring coat.  Beautiful day, high 50°.  Helen and I washed in late afternoon.  Watched the Minnesota high school basketball tournament at night.  Austin won.”  Austin beat Brainerd, 68 to 63.

Mmmm, Candy!

In Minneapolis on Friday, March 21, 1958, Dale wrote, “Downtown after work to look for a coat for Dalene.  Bought Helen a box of candy.  Watched state high school basketball tournament on TV at night.”

Lots Of Snow

In Minneapolis on Monday, March 20, 1967, Dale wrote, “High 34° and 2 more inches of snow.  77.8 inches of snow this season, so far.”

Portable TV

In Minneapolis on Thursday, March 19, 1959, Dale wrote, “High 52°.  Nice day.  I took a rental portable TV to work and watched state high school basketball games.  Helen has a head cold.  Letter from Rod Mead.  Watched basketball on TV at night.”

1967 Basketball Champs

In Minneapolis on Saturday, March 18, 1967, Dale wrote, “Watched Minnesota high school basketball tourney, Edina won it.”  Edina was unbeaten that year (27-0), winning over Moorhead, 72 to 55.

Candy For Kisses

On sick leave in Muscatine, Tuesday, March 17, 1953, Dale wrote, “Helen and I took a ride through Weed Park.  Stan went to Clinton to sing; he sold candy for kisses on the bus on the way home.  Dalene went roller skating in the afternoon.”

Little Darlin’

On Saturday, March 16, 1957, recording group The Diamonds released “Little Darlin’,” which went Gold as the third biggest recording of that year.  Above is a video of them two years later, introduced by Dick Clark.

Blizzard Of ’57

In Minneapolis on Friday, March 15, 1957, Dale wrote, “4½ inches of snow in a blizzard, worst of the winter.”  Above: Dalene in front of the house after they shoveled.

Train From L.A.

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, March 14, 1961, Dale wrote, “High 47° and nice.  Helen and I met Mary Skinner at the train from L.A.  We took her home and visited.”  Mary was Judy’s grandmother, who came back from visiting Judy and me in California.

A Quiet Day
