In Minneapolis on Wednesday, January 11, 1961, Dale wrote, “High 42°.  Tied an all-time high record set in 1928.  We ate supper at the Candlelight Café.”

Dale Sees A Show

In Minneapolis on Thursday, January 10, 1957, Dale wrote, “Low -6°, high +12°.  Picked Dalene up at bowling after work.  I went to the Avalon theatre at night.”  That’s it above.

Feed The Meter!

On Wednesday, January 9, 1952, Dale’s cousin Roswell Gardner stopped by the Muscatine alcohol plant on his way to Osage, about 190 miles northwest of Muscatine.  Later that day, Dale had to pay a meter maid $1.10 at Neitzel’s drug store.

Cold Weather Clothing

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, January 8, 1957, Dale wrote, “High 33°, low 1° below at bedtime.  I bought two new flannel shirts and two throw rugs at Fredin’s after work.  Dalene went to a skating party after school.”

Mmmm – Banana Cream Pie

In Minneapolis on Monday, January 7, 1957, Dale wrote, “I took Dalene and Judy skating after I got home from work.  Dalene baked her first pie, a cream one.  Very good.”  Judy was a friend.

Marie And Susan Visit

On Friday, January 6, 1950, Marie Kimmel and her daughter Susan arrived in Muscatine from Osceola, where they met Dale and Helen at Dalene’s grade school, Jefferson Elementary (above).

Roller Skating

In Muscatine on Friday, January 5, 1951, Dale wrote, “Stanley went roller skating at night.”  The skating rink was a half-block up East Seventh Street from our house.

Going To The Library

In Minneapolis on Saturday, January 4, 1958, Dale wrote, “Helen, Dalene, and I went downtown to the library.  Wrote Mother a letter.  High was 28°.  Nice day.  Dalene went to Sharon’s to stay all night.  I went to a show.”  Sharon was a friend.

Listening To The Radio

Near Osceola on Friday, January 3, 1936, Dale and Helen went to their neighbor Peagues farm to listen to President Roosevelt’s message to Congress.  I think the folks did not own a radio.  Above: a farm family listening to the radio in the 1930s.

1961 Rose Bowl

In Minneapolis on Monday, January 2, 1961, Dale wrote, “Holiday.  In the house all day.  10° below at 8 a.m.  Zero at 11 p.m.  Watched the Rose Bowl Parade and Washington 17 – Minnesota 7, on TV.  Light snow.  Dalene went to a show at night.”

Rose Bowl In NC?

On Thursday, January 1, 1942, Dale worked all day as Gauger at George Benz Bottling Works in St. Paul.  The Rose Bowl was played in Durham, North Carolina, due to fears of a Japanese attack on the west coast following the attack on Pearl Harbor three weeks earlier.  The Oregon State Beavers defeated the host Duke Blue Devils 20-16.  Happy New Year!
