Dale Loses A Tooth

In Minneapolis on Wednesday, March 11, 1964, Dale wrote, “High 40° and bright.  Took sick leave to go to Dr. Norman and had a tooth pulled.  Showed Sheila our home movies in the evening.  Letter from Dalene.”  Sheila La Von rented the basement room.

Home From Osceola

In Minneapolis on Sunday, March 10, 1957, Dale wrote, “Helen, Dalene, and I drove from Osceola to Minneapolis city limits in 6 hours.  Wilma is better.  Ate supper at Herringer’s Café.  Brother, I’m tired, and glad to get home.”  They had been in Osceola for Helen’s sister Wilma’s surgery.

On Saturday, March 9, 1957, Dale and Dalene were in Owatonna, Minnesota, on their way from Minneapolis to Osceola where Helen was visiting her sister Wilma after Wilma’s surgery.   Dale wrote, “Up at 6 and on to Osceola by 7.  Arrived at 1 p.m., no trouble.  Saw Wilma.  Took Helen to the hospital and took Lela to Louie’s.  Back to Mother’s by 9 p.m.  Saw Marie’s pictures at Mother’s.  Nice day.”  Lela was the other sister to Helen and Wilma, Louie was one of their brothers, and Marie was Dale’s sister.

Dale Drives To Clarence

On Thursday, March 8, 1951, Dale and Dalene drove from Muscatine to Clarence, Iowa, with a co-worker for him to pick up his new Chevrolet.  Dale and Dalene visited with Olive Olsgaard and her girls a little while, then drove back to Muscatine.  Helen and Dale had been close friends of Orris and Olive Olsgaard in the late 1930s in Washington, DC.

Bedfast in Muscatine on Saturday, March 7, 1953, Dale wrote, “Lavonne took Helen downtown.  Marie called, Lloyd and Mother coming on the train.  Got here at 8:30 p.m.  Watched TV awhile and then to bed.”  Marie and Lloyd were Dale’s siblings.  Lavonne was the wife of Dale’s co-worker Jack Owens.  Thirty years later, Lavonne and Jack (center) visited Helen and Dale in Osceola, above.

It Snows In Minneapolis

In Minneapolis on Monday, March 6, 1961, Dale wrote, “8 inches of snow yesterday and last night.  12 inches since last Friday.  I put chains on our Plymouth and Dalene’s Valiant.  I went to work on the bus, Dalene took a cab.  31° above.”

Death Of Stalin

Bedfast in Muscatine on Thursday, March 5, 1953, Dale wrote, “Got an extension telephone installed by our bed.  Dalene went to a basketball game with Linda at night.  Joe Stalin died.”  Soviet dictator Stalin had held power for three decades.

Ten Inches Of Snow

In Muscatine on Tuesday, March 4, 1952, after ten inches of snow fell overnight, Dale got stuck driving out of the garage behind our house on East Seventh Street and had to shovel snow a half-block downhill in the alley to Mulberry Avenue to go to work.  The next day, he left the car parked on the street and wrote, “Too much snow to get it in garage.”

Happy Anniversary!

In St. Paul on Tuesday, March 3, 1942, Dale wrote, “10th wedding anniversary.  Married 10 years ago today in Maryville, Missouri.”  (They eloped from Osceola.)

Working On Income Tax

In Muscatine on Monday, March 2, 1953, Dale wrote, “Sick leave.  Third treatment by Dr. Stella.  I wrote to St. Paul to find out where I am going to work.  Worked on income tax.”
