Helen’s New Smile

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, December 10, 1957, Dale wrote, “Winter is here.  Zero degrees at 11 p.m. and windy.  Helen got her new false teeth tonight, and she is happy with them.  Makes her look ten years younger.”  Here she is:

Bill Roach Trophy

In Muscatine on Thursday, December 9, 1954, an assembly at Muscatine High School honored two football players who received the Bill Roach Memorial Trophy: Ernie Morgan and Tom Hahn.  Both seniors had played football all four years they were in high school, and showed the required qualities of sportsmanship, team spirit, perseverance, and courage.  From the yearbook, below are Tom (left) and Ernie (right).

Born To Dance

In Minneapolis on Sunday, December 8, 1957, Dale wrote, “Went to the drug store and bought some Christmas records.  Watched football on TV.  Watched a movie ‘Born to Dance’ on TV.”

Pearl Harbor Day

In St. Paul on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Dale wrote, “Blizzard at night.  Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Honolulu.”  Below: the sunken battleship USS Arizona is clearly seen below its memorial in the harbor.

Dale Watches ‘The Bridges At Toko-Ri’

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, December 6, 1966, Dale wrote, “Dalene phoned in the evening, she will arrive here this Saturday.  Watched a movie, ‘The Bridges at Toko-Ri.’  Sad ending.”  Dalene lived in Los Angeles at the time.

In Minneapolis on Monday, December 5, 1955, Dale wrote, “This is the coldest December 5th in Minnesota weather history.  7° below zero.  Froze the car up taking Dalene to school.”

Dalene Goes To ‘Canteen’

In Minneapolis on Friday, December 4, 1959, Dale wrote, “High 32°.  Helen and I went downtown after work and bought Christmas presents for Dalene, also bought a train case for our trip.  Dalene went to ‘Canteen’ at night with our car.”  That “Canteen” was a Friday night event for teens at the local Methodist church.

Stan Goes To Night School

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, December 3, 1957, Dale wrote, “Dalene went to a basketball game at night.  Stan went to evening class after supper.”  I was working full-time, and was a math major in the evenings at the University of Minnesota.

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, December 2, 1958, Dale wrote, “High 43°.  I ate lunch at a dime store in St. Anthony.  Stan went to choir practice at night.  Dalene went to Junior Achievement.”  What is Junior Achievement, you ask?  Watch this:

Dale Gets A Raise

In St. Paul on Monday, December 1, 1941, Dale recorded his appointment as a U.S. Storekeeper-Gauger, with a 23% raise from $1,620 to $2,000 per year, about $31,500 today.
