Putting Storm Windows Up

In Minneapolis on Saturday, October 11, 1958, Dale wrote, “Stan and I put storm windows on the upstairs apartment.  High today 51° and a beautiful day.”  The photo below shows the back stairs to the second floor apartment; Helen and Jettie are on the back porch.

1951 World Series

On Wednesday, October 10, 1951, Dale’s cousin Roswell Gardner was in Muscatine, and had supper with Helen and Dale.  They listened to the last World Series game, Yankees 4 – Giants 3.  Here are some highlights:

Dale Buys A Dodge

In Muscatine on Saturday, October 9, 1954, Dale bought a 1948 Dodge four-door sedan; it looked like the one below, with that distinctive grille.  I used to borrow it for dates.

Ozzie And Harriet

On Sunday, October 8, 1944, CBS launched The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet on radio.  When Red Skelton was drafted into the Army in March 1944, his radio show came to an end.  Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were members of Skelton’s cast, and Ozzie was prompted to create his own family situation comedy for radio.  (Harriet was from Des Moines, Iowa.)  Their sons, David and Ricky, joined the show when they were old enough, and the show migrated to television in 1952.  You can listen to a radio episode from 1949 here:

Dalene On A Hayride

In Minneapolis on Wednesday, October 7, 1958, Dale wrote, “Nice day, partly cloudy, in the low 70s.  Dalene went on a hayride at night, Stan and a girl friend chaperoned.”

In Muscatine on Monday, October 6, 1952, I started working after school and weekends at Cohn’s news agency for 50¢ per hour.  I stocked paperback books and drove early morning truck delivery of Sunday paper bundles around town.  Cohn’s ad in our 1952 yearbook:

In Minneapolis on Sunday, October 5, 1958, Dale wrote, “Weather-stripped the back door.  Nice day, high 70°.  Watched pro football on TV.  Watched a late movie, ‘George Washington Slept Here.’”

Franciscan Monastery

In Washington, DC, on Sunday, October 4, 1936, friends Bill and Louise took Dale and Helen to the Franciscan monastery.  Dale wrote, “Most beautiful and impressive place I’ve ever seen.”_

Muscatine Football Game

In Muscatine on Friday, October 3, 1952, Dale wrote, “Dalene, Stan, and I went to a high school football game.  Muscatine beat Washington 19-6.”  Below: the yearbook photo of the 1952 high school varsity football team.

In Minneapolis on Tuesday, October 2, 1956, Dale wrote, “Dalene went on a picnic supper with school friends.  I went to a show at night at the Avalon theatre.”

My Blue Heaven

In Muscatine on Sunday, October 1, 1950, Dale and Helen took Stanley and Dalene to a show, “My Blue Heaven.”  The song by the same name was Dale and Helen’s favorite and you can hear Bing Crosby sing it here:
